Dowelltown

Alexandria

I got my first real job here in Alexandria, and have always been impressed by the town’s strong sense of pride and community. It’s evident in the sign—“Home of the Finest Folks on Earth”—which greets visitors arriving on Highway 70 from nearby Wilson County.

Fast factsFor the town’s 800-plus citizens, the town is ideally situated along 70 and state Highway 53 for an easy commute to Carthage, Lebanon or Nashville, an hour away.

Alexandria wasn’t formally founded until 1820 but settlement in the area began in the early 1800s. One of the towns’ most recognized landmarks are expansive fairgrounds and grandstand located a short walk from the square on Goose Creek. In 1863 the Kentucky raiders under Confederate General John Hunt Morgan camped on the grounds there a while before launching Morgan’s famous raid into Ohio. A marker on the town square commemorates that event.

Every summer Alexandria hosts the Dekalb County Fair, for a week of exhibits, events and amusement rides. The event is dubbed the “Grandpa Fair of the South” as the longest running county fair in the region. It was first held in 1856.

Real estate in the town includes older homes, newer houses and several small subdivisions. Beyond the the city limits, farms and smaller tracts of land and lots can be found, especially in the hills, fields and bottoms. Nearby communities include Watertown to the west, Brush Creek to the North and Temperance Hall to the northeast.
